PC Developer News- ZeniMax Media Acquires id Software

June 24, 2009, Zenimax Media (Bethesda Softworks, parent company) acquired id Software, makers of famous FPS PC games, Doom, Wolfenstein, and Quake. This will combine Bethesda known for RPGs such as the TES Series and Fallout 3 with id experts for FPS games.

I have been following id Softwares upcoming title Rage, a racing/FPS PC game that looks very promising. Having a similar post-apocalyptic genre such as Fallout 3, it will be intriging to find out what the finished product will be with Zenimax's influence.

Personally I hope that id software will be able to fix some of the issues I had while playing fallout 3, such as bad ballistics and bad combat AI. They may also make use of id's graphics engine id tech 5. The graphics engine looks great, and I believe it is supposed to be quite optimized unlike Bethesda's.

Anyways I think that great things could come out of this, and I can not wait to see what happens.

Any comments are always welcome,

PC Games, Dumbed Down for Consoles?

In a moving trend of games being made for multiplatform releases, have PC games become dumbed down for the mass audience of consoles?

When I say this I mean through content such as dialogue, as well as overall diffculty. Personally I think this has been somewhat true. For example, Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series, had great PC games such as Morrowind, that where particularly dialogue heavy. They assumed the player had a brain and could figure out where stuff was. The next TES installment, Oblivion, was much more marketed towards consoles. It went from a dialogue heavy game like Morrowind, to a few lines per NPC in Oblivion. It also added compasses, map markers, and fast travel to the game making the player not have to explore, or actually play the game, but follow a sequence of events. I'm not saying all this is bad, when there is actually a marker down to the spot of where you have to go, it is not entertaining to say the least.

Another example is how many games are not being made for the PC. The computer has become an afterthought to console gaming, that they just add on to make more sales.

Hopefully this is just a phase, as more developers are making great games that can be played on all systems, without sacrificing quality from one system to the next.

Just something I felt,

Bioshock- What I am playing today....

I only picked up Bioshock recently although it was released on August 21, 2007. It had gone down in price to $19.99, and the game was definitely worth it.

It lived up to the expectations. Made by 2K Australia/Boston, Bioshock is a first person shooter with RPG elements that blends a fantastic story and setting together seemlessly even though it is an FPS. The major element of the game for me is the setting. From leaking pipes, to beautiful underwater views, Bioshock has a lot of fantastic art deco. The people of Rapture, and their diaries really create a look into the lives of the civilians. It paints a backstory and immerses the player into the game. The depiction of the cursed people of rapture, turned into violent and grotesque creatures brings a great horror feel to the game.

My hat is off to the staff of 2K for taking something realistically unbelievable and making me a believer. I recommend this PC game to anyone who hasn't played it, and look forward to the sequel, Bioshock 2, on October 30, this fall.
